Falling Still is a dramatic architectural sculpture incorporating thousands of metal leaves, suspended in a rich composition of light and reflection.
The project was commissioned by Hilton for the new lobby space on Park Lane as part of a complete redesign of the iconic hotel. Giles Miller’s sculpture combines artisanal craftsmanship with a completely new approach to sculpture within a space, using miniature high tensile wires to suspend pieces with a specially engineered fixing that allows the artist to control the exact angle and position of the suspended leaves individually.
The project was realised by a dream-team of British suppliers and makers, with the entire sculpture being designed and fabricated in the UK.
Giles commented, “The Hilton Park Lane is a junction of the world, harbouring the energy of a mass of people moving through and around it at any one moment. This thought inspired us to think about a mass of objects, representing all of us as we flow through the city energetically and deliberately.
The leaves of Hyde Park became the foremost inspiration for the detail of this work, and the final sculpture comprises over 2000 leaves, composed in a static yet energetic explosion and manifesting ideas of movement, energy, togetherness and also individuality. The composition of the piece appears as a kind of tiered wave, rolling through the space in an explosive movement whose form varies dependant on the viewers perspective, inspiring the hotel’s visitors as they walk around it.”
