Culture, Creativity and Wellbeing: How the Arts Support Our Health

28-10-2025

Research has confirmed what many have long suspected – taking part in arts and culture is genuinely good for our health and wellbeing.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport commissioned research from Frontier Economics to explore the profound impact of the arts, culture and heritage on our health. The report brings together evidence from thousands of studies, showing that taking part in creative and cultural activities, whether it’s visiting museums, experiencing public art, joining a choir, watching theatre or making art, can boost both mental and physical wellbeing. People who regularly engage in these experiences report lower stress levels, better mood, and even improvements in conditions like chronic pain and dementia.

The Guardian’s coverage of the findings puts it simply: culture makes people happier and healthier. Even attending just a few events a year can make a measurable difference to life satisfaction and longevity.

For the studio, this research feels particularly relevant. It reinforces the idea that creative and cultural environments aren’t just about aesthetics – they’re about wellbeing too. The spaces we build, the materials we use, and the experiences we design all have the potential to improve how people feel, connect and live.

Art and culture don’t just enrich our lives – they help us live them better.
